History

In the Spring of 1982, five Retired Military Officers, who lived on Hilton Head Island, were members of the Beaufort, South Carolina Chapter of The Retired Officers Association (TROA). Other Retired Officers lived on Hilton Head and were members of the National Chapter of TROA, but were not members of the local Beaufort Chapter. With the assistance of the Beaufort Chapter, it sponsored the development of a new Hilton Head Area Chapter.

The first meeting of the new Hilton Head TROA Chapter was held on February 16, 1983 with 36 charter members present. The Hilton Head Area Chapter of the now Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) serves Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Sun City and other areas south of the Broad River. The Chapter currently has a membership of approximately 150. The Chapter also supports a Ladies Auxilliary.

Annual activities of the Chapter include placing flags by Veteran gravesites at Six Oaks Cemetery; manning Patriot’s Outpost (a hospitality tent for active duty personnel) at the Heritage Golf Tournament; supporting the Lt. Dan week and the Healing Heroes Banquet; providing judges for science fair programs; providing financial support for the Fisher House Foundation, and our Junior ROTC Scholarships; and hosting a picnic for all Chapter Members.

A complete History of The Hilton Head Area Chapter of MOAA  for each calendar year from 1982 to the present may be found in a copy of the Chapter’s MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY.
